Kelly Costa
Research and Communications

As a writer, researcher and project manager, Kelly believes that the most effective plans for impact are built on a rigorous fact base, drive sensible actions, and are communicated with vivid clarity. Kelly’s work focuses on issue research for philanthropy and nonprofit engagements, informing program development and strategic planning. Since 1991 Kelly has been an advocate for social change and sustainability, working as an independent writer, nonprofit co-director, and leader of large-scale initiatives for nonprofits and social enterprises. She established and served as operational director of Paul Hawken’s nonprofit Natural Capital Institute, leading sustainability research engagements for a range of philanthropic and Fortune 500 clients. She was also instrumental in the founding of the open-source social change networking site Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree in graphic communications at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and her master’s in Geography and Human Environmental Studies at San Francisco State University.
